Siriyur Water Survey to Dhanakadadu Checkdam

Siriyur Water Survey to Dhanakadadu Checkdam - 16-3-2005

The survey to the Dhanakadavu checkdam started around 9 a.m. from Siriyur village with seven volunteers. Before starting the survey, the water filling up rates of pots were studied for 14 and 18 liters capacity. To fill a pot of 14 liters took 40.5 seconds on an average and to fill a pot of 18 liters took 1 minute and 3 seconds. There was no tap fixed for the pipeline only a wooden block was placed for stopping water, there is little leakage.

Followed the pipeline from the village to the check dam with the village volunteers. The path was tracked with GPS up to the check dam and beyond. The stream bed is dry except for few places where water is found stagnant. On the way saw the type of vegetation which is dry deciduous and lots of amla trees(phylanthus officianalis) were found with big fruits. Few wildlife sighting like Indian Gaur, Sambar were found on the way up. Reached the Dhanakadavu check dam which is about 2.7 kms from the village. Took photographs of the check dam. It was built by the TAP programme and the cross section is 12 mtrs by 8 mtrs with lots of siltation, hardly with any water storage place. The over flow mouth of the check dam is about 3 mtrs 14 inches and the left upper reveatment is 8.10 ft. and the right reveatment is 16.4 ft. We feel there is a high sediment rate during the rainy season. It has been built with an filteration channel.

We had taken a flow reading of the water input to the check dam. The water flows down a rock face to the check dam. Ten readings were recorded using the Kinley water bottle of one liter capacity. The readings are as follows:
  1. 10.52 Sec
  2. 10.24
  3. 8.34
  4. 8.57
  5. 7.88
  6. 8.04
  7. 9.34
  8. 8.60
  9. 8.43
  10. 8.72

From the above readings, we found that the average flow of water is 8.863 seconds per liter.

We have taken a water sample from the check dam for testing. We further moved upwards to see one water hole and two springs, on the way came across lots of Eecham (Phoenix humilis) area which were not harvested and lots of amla & Kadukai(Terminalia chebula) trees with fruits. Reached almost kachakadavu area (private property) and returned back to the settlement by late afternoon.

The water sample has been tested in the office for nine parameters and the results are as below: Date of Sampling - 16/3/2005 & Date of testing - 17-3-2005.
